Morrowind Black Screen On Exit

I have seen others complain in the past of a blacked screen on exiting Morrowind which was difficult/impossible to escape from. The response then was Morrowind is a very old program made for Windows XP and you have to expect stuff like that. Which is no more useful than the above reply.I also occasionally experience this problem, especially when modding and using ALT-TAB to switch between Morrowind and the desktop without exiting Morrowind.

In my case, if I do CTRL-ALT-DEL and I see the usual options of 'Lock', 'Switch User'. 'Task Manager', but if I choose Task Manager it never appears as Morrowind immediately puts a black screen over the Task Manager, so it is impossible for me to kill off Morrowind. Is this the same behaviour that you see? If so, you can get out of it by choosing Switch User and changing to another administrator account. In the other administrator account you should be able to open Task Manager and end the Morrowind task, then switch back to the original account.But, I think I may have a solution, and I hope you will help me test it out.Occasionally I see reference to a popup window complaining about a 'Runtime Error!' In 'Microsoft Visual C Runtime Library'. This popup requires you to press an 'OK' button before it allows Morrowind to crash.

I believe that the 'black screen' is when Morrowind has already crashed but you normally never see the 'Runtime Error!' Popup window as Morrowind trys to take over the screen. Even if you do see the popup window you cannot click the 'OK' button as Morrowind has taken control of the mouse and you have no way of doing a 'click'.I found an interesting video on the 'Runtime Error!' InThey refer to a downloaded vcredist.x64.exe which you can find atIn essence, you have to delete the 2005 x86 Visual C distributable, then install the 2017 x64 version.I have tried this and instead of an occasional 'black screen' I get a typical popup window saying the program has crashed and do you want to inform the publisher. You still get a crash, but it is easy to exit and you can restart Morrowind if you wish.I would be interested to hear if this 'fixes' your problem. In fact, through no actions of my own, Morrowind has been quitting cleanly to desktop lately. I still get the occasional CTD, but when quit from the menu it's been clean.
